Washington, D.C. – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today issued the following statement regarding the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on Masterpiece Cakeshop vs. Colorado Civil Rights Commission:

“Today’s ruling does nothing to change Colorado’s strong anti-discrimination law. At the same time, the Court’s attempt to balance this commitment with sincerely-held religious beliefs reminds us of our broader obligation to practice tolerance and fight discrimination.”

Last November, Bennet filed an Amicus Brief in support of enforcing Colorado’s anti-discrimination statute providing civil rights protections for historically marginalized groups, including the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community. Bennet also is a cosponsor of the Equality Act, comprehensive federal legislation to ban discrimination against LGBTQ Americans.
