Washington, DC – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today announced that the U.S. Department of Education is awarding more than $43 million dollars through two grants – one to the Colorado Department of Education and another to STRIVE Preparatory Schools – to create and expand high-quality charter schools in Colorado.

The Colorado Department of Education has won $18,179,999 through the Charter Schools Program for the first year of its grant, while STRIVE Preparatory Schools will receive $3,168,894 in the first year of its grant through funding for charter management organizations.

“In Colorado, many charter schools are helping improve student achievement and preparing students for success in college and careers in the 21st century economy,” Bennet said. “These grants will help both the Colorado Department of Education and the Colorado Charter Schools Program continue to invest in our kids and give them access to a high quality education no matter where they live.”

During the Senate’s consideration of a bill to fix No Child Left Behind, Bennet secured a provision to revamp the Charter Schools Program to support the development of effective charter schools in addition to the replication of high-quality charter schools which have demonstrated success.
