Washington, DC – Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator for Colorado, today released the following statement on the Senate’s confirmation of Elena Kagan to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court by a vote of 63-37.  Bennet proudly voted in favor of her nomination.

“Today, the Senate put aside partisan politics to fulfill one of its most important responsibilities—to advise and consent on nominations to our nation’s highest court. Solicitor General Kagan is a tremendous addition to our nation’s Supreme Court, not only because she will be the third woman on the court and fourth ever in the Court’s history, but because of her demonstrated pragmatic, non-ideological perspective and appreciation for legal precedent and the Constitution, as well as a firm grasp of how the law affects the lives of the American people.

“When I met with Solicitor General Kagan, I was impressed with her intellect, demeanor and accomplished résumé. We had a productive conversation on her judicial philosophy and her planned approach toward deliberating cases as a member of the Supreme Court.

“Ms. Kagan meets the highest standard of intellect and achievement. The diversity of her experience and accomplishments will add perspective and depth to the deliberations in the Court chamber.  I have confidence that Ms. Kagan will dutifully serve our nation and be a model justice.”
