Washington, DC – The Senate late yesterday adopted an amendment introduced by Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet to give students the ability to use federal financial aid at innovative programs that demonstrate high-quality and strong student outcomes, such as learning, graduation and job obtainment. Bennet worked with Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) on the amendment.

“Higher education has never been more important for our kids and grandkids. More and more jobs are requiring a postsecondary degree or advanced training,” Bennet said. “Our priority should be ensure student success and preparation for the 21st century job market. This amendment provides students greater flexibility to use their federal aid at programs that are proven effective.”

Currently, only students attending accredited institutions of higher education can receive federal student aid funds. The current process for accreditation can be complex and focus too heavily on inputs and process. This amendment creates an alternative outcomes-based process that would allow students to use their federal aid at new providers and existing colleges and universities that demonstrate successful student outcomes and offer innovative and effective programs.
