Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today released the following statement regarding President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address.
“The President’s call for a bipartisan fix to our broken immigration system is in line with Colorado’s values. From our robust agriculture, tourism and hi-tech industries to DREAMers in our schools who know only this country as their home, Colorado epitomizes our nation’s need to fix our immigration system. We now have the best chance in 20 years to pass a bipartisan bill that will strengthen our economy and our families, better protect our borders and communities, and offer a tough but fair path to citizenship for the 11 million people living here without legal status.
“In addition to immigration, the President laid out an agenda that reflects many of Colorado’s priorities. Washington must come together on an energy future that protects public health and begins to address climate change, to fix our education system and find effective ways to keep the wrong guns out of the wrong people’s hands.
“As several fiscal deadlines approach, it’s long past time we produce a comprehensive plan that gets out economy moving and materially reduces the debt. It should include a balanced combination of changes to entitlements, spending cuts and tax reform.”
