Washington, DC – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today released the following statement commending the announcement of voluntary efforts being made by many for-profit colleges, called “Standards of Responsible Conduct and Transparency”:
“A college degree is a necessary – though not always sufficient – passport to the middle class. We need to work to ensure that each student’s college experience puts them squarely on a path to success in the job market, without causing them to amass astronomical debt. It has been my long-held position that for-profit colleges can play an important role opening the doors of college to more students.
“I am very pleased to see these schools take the initiative to develop and agree to follow standards to improve the experience for their students. These standards should help ensure all students have the information necessary to complete their degrees and succeed after graduation. This is a significant step in the right direction and, if implemented well, can prove that industry best actors can insist on industry-wide benchmarks for the public good. I hope all for-profit colleges will sign onto these standards and work to protect students so they get the best education possible.”
