Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) and Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.) led 43 of their Senate colleagues to introduce the Tax Cut for Workers Act, which would cut taxes for millions of working Americans by expanding the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC). U.S. Representatives Dwight Evans (D-Pa.) and Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) introduced partner legislation in the House.
“While President Trump proposes tax cuts for the wealthiest, Democrats are fighting to build an economy that works for everyone,” said Bennet. “Now more than ever, working people need help making ends meet. This bill will provide vital support for workers in Colorado and across the country through an expanded Earned Income Tax Credit.”
“With costs skyrocketing right now thanks to the Trump administration, millions of hardworking Americans need expanded tax relief to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table for their families,” said Cortez Masto. “This bill is focused on those who really need a tax cut – middle-class Americans who contribute to our economy – not Donald Trump’s billionaire friends.
The EITC has provided tax relief to millions of workers for decades. The Tax Cut for Workers Act will expand the EITC by cutting taxes for working Americans without children, who currently receive a much smaller EITC than workers with children. This expansion will include around 230,000 Coloradans, nearly tripling the average tax break many Americans receive from the existing EITC. It will also extend eligibility for the tax cut to workers under the age of 25 and over the age of 64.
Bennet has long fought to expand and improve tax credits for Colorado workers and families. This week, Bennet reintroduced the American Family Act to permanently expand the Child Tax Credit (CTC) for middle-class and low-income families. In February, Bennet introduced a budget resolution amendment to reduce child poverty through an expanded CTC. In 2024, Bennet pushed for an expanded CTC as part of the Wyden-Smith Tax Relief for American Workers and Families Act. In 2023, Bennet introduced the Working Families Tax Relief Act to make permanent the American Rescue Plan’s expansion of both the Earned Income Tax Credit and CTC. In 2021, Bennet urged Former President Biden to build on the American Rescue Plan Act by making tax credits for families and workers permanent.
In addition to Bennet and Cortez Masto, U.S. Senators Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), Tammy Baldwin (D-Wis.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Tammy Duckworth (D-Ill.), Dick Durbin (D-Ill.), John Fetterman (D-Pa.), Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), John Hickenlooper (D-Colo.), Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Mark Kelly (D-Ariz.), Andy Kim (D-N.J.), Angus King (I-Maine), Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.), Ben Ray Luján (D-N.M.), Ed Markey (D-Mass.), Jeff Merkley (D-Ore.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), Jon Ossoff (D-Ga.), Patty Murray (D-Wash.), Alex Padilla (D-Calif.), Gary Peters (D-Mich.), Jack Reed (D-R.I.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.), Tina Smith (D-Minn.), Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Raphael Warnock (D-Ga.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-R.I.), and Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) cosponsored the bill.
