Washington, D.C. — U.S. Senator Michael Bennet (D-Colo.) joined U.S. Senator Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.) and 15 Senate colleagues to introduce the Tariff Transparency Act. This legislation would require the independent, bipartisan U.S. International Trade Commission to issue a report on the economic effects of recent and proposed tariffs. Specifically, the report will assess how President Trump’s imposition of tariffs on imports from Canada and Mexico, and his threats of additional tariffs, will affect American consumers, farmers, ranchers, and small businesses.
“President Trump’s decision to impose across-the-board tariffs on Canada and Mexico, two of our strongest international partners, is the wrong one. These tariffs will hurt Colorado workers and families, stymie international cooperation on transnational challenges like irregular migration and drug trafficking, and undermine our ability to compete with China,” said Senator Bennet. “The Trump Administration must be transparent with the public about how this incoherent trade war will affect their lives. Our bill will ensure that Americans have concrete, nonpartisan data on the effects of these tariffs.”
“Marylanders are struggling to put food on the table and afford the basic necessities as it is. The last thing we need are tariffs that will raise prices,” said Alsobrooks. “The truth is this: the Trump Administration knows that the tariffs on allies like Canada and Mexico will raise prices for consumers, spike inflation, and harm American small businesses. If they disagree, now is their time to prove it. My bill will force a nonpartisan study on this Administration’s tariffs and how they will impact everyday Americans.”
In addition to Bennet and Alsobrooks, U.S. Senators Ron Wyden (D-Ore.), Chris Coons (D-Del.), Catherine Cortez Masto (D-Nev.), Tim Kaine (D-Va.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Lisa Blunt Rochester (D-Del.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.), Brian Schatz (D-Hawaii), Chris Van Hollen (D-Va.), Mark Warner (D-Va.), Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.), Peter Welch (D-Vt.), Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), and Andy Kim (D-N.J.) cosponsored the bill.
