Washington, D.C. — Colorado U.S. Senators Michael Bennet and John Hickenlooper applauded an announcement from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that Colorado will receive $54 million in Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) resources to support low-income families across the state. This funding is made available through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and congressional appropriations which will distribute $3.7 billion in LIHEAP funding throughout the country.
“Colorado families should not be forced to make impossible decisions between putting food on the table and heating their homes. This assistance will make it easier for Coloradans to cover home energy costs this winter and help families and seniors stay warm,” said Bennet.
“No Coloradan should have to worry about keeping their home warm this winter,” said Hickenlooper. “LIHEAP keeps working families and seniors on a fixed income safe.”
LIHEAP funding is a crucial lifeline that helps low-income households pay their energy bills, helping them stay safe during the winter. Last season, approximately 77,500 low-income households in Colorado received assistance with heating and cooling costs via LIHEAP.
Households can identify if they may be eligible for assistance by using the LIHEAP Eligibility Tool and apply for assistance online, or by calling the National Energy Assistance Referral hotline at 1-866-674-6327.
Bennet helped to pass the American Rescue Plan Act and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which fund LIHEAP resources each year. Last year, Bennet welcomed more than $64 million in LIHEAP funding for Colorado after urging HHS to release funds as swiftly and at the highest level possible.
