Washington, D.C. – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today issued the following statement after reviewing documents that have not been made public related to Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh’s work in the Bush White House.
“Earlier today, I had an opportunity to review some of the documents that the Republicans have kept from the American people,” Bennet said. “Given the enormous stakes around Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination, these documents should be made public immediately. At the very least, we should not hold confirmation hearings until the National Archives has published all of the documents from Judge Kavanaugh’s public service.”
The Senate Judiciary Committee has made available only a fraction of Judge Kavanaugh’s records during his tenure in the Bush White House. The Committee’s Chairman, Senator Chuck Grassley, has deemed these documents to be “committee confidential” and only available for review by senators and Judiciary Committee staff. Only 3 percent of Judge Kavanaugh’s documents have been made available to the committee. By contrast, 99 percent of Elena Kagan’s documents from her tenure in the Clinton White House were made available prior to her confirmation hearings in 2009.
