Washington, D.C. – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet sent a letter on Monday to U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer, insisting that dairy issues with Canada are addressed in the NAFTA renegotiations, while maintaining existing agricultural market access for American producers selling to Mexico and Canada.
Last year, President Trump promised to stand up for dairy farmers by securing fair trade policies with American trading partners, including Canada. Bennet wrote to Ambassador Lighthizer, urging him to uphold the President’s commitment:
“American dairy producers have faced both falling prices and unfair Canadian policies that are undermining their ability to sell into the Canadian market,” Bennet wrote. “Less than a year ago, President Trump went to Wisconsin and promised – in clear, unambiguous terms – that he would correct these unfair practices. I urge you not to miss this opportunity to support American agricultural exports, particularly for the American dairy industry as it faces a precarious moment.”
