Washington, D.C. – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today issued the following statement in response to President Trump’s announcement to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and move the United States Embassy in Tel Aviv to Jerusalem:

“As it has been for many years, Jerusalem is the capital of the State of Israel; its final status must be resolved as part of direct negotiations between the Israelis and the Palestinians. I am concerned the President’s announcement today-absent support from regional partners and allies, and outside the confines of a plan-undermines the prospect for negotiations and risks destabilizing an already volatile region. The administration should take constructive steps to restart direct negotiations with the longstanding, bipartisan goal of two states living side by side in peace and security.”
