Washington, D.C. – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today issued the following statement in response to the Trump Administration’s decision to reconsider the strength of carbon pollution and fuel economy standards for cars and light trucks.

“The Administration’s decision to reconsider vehicle standards puts special interests ahead of American consumers and the environment,” Bennet said. “Instead of helping hard working Americans, this action could increase costs for consumers, stifle innovation, pollute our air, and create uncertainty for Colorado companies developing clean, fuel efficient technologies. As the rest of the world races ahead to meet growing global demand for cleaner and more fuel efficient vehicles, this decision moves us in the opposite direction.”

The current standards will prevent billions of tons of carbon pollution. Coloradans are on track to save thousands in fuel costs by 2025. Many automobile manufacturers are already set to exceed the standards ahead of schedule. The Administration’s decision threatens this progress.
