Washington, D.C. – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet issued the following statement in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month. The festivities, which occur from September 15 to October 15, celebrate the many histories and cultures which make up the Latino community and the countless contributions Latinos have made to the country.
“One of Colorado’s greatest attributes is the diversity of cultures that converge in our state, including a rich Hispanic history. Hispanics have played a significant role in revitalizing our communities and strengthening our economy. We need to keep fighting for issues that are important to the Hispanic community, such as improving college access and affordability, increasing job opportunities, and fixing our broken immigration system.
“Hispanic Heritage Month is a good time to reaffirm our commitment to the Hispanic community by honoring their valuable contributions in the shaping of our country, to mark the progress that has been attained in the community, and to continue to support the next generation of Hispanics.”
Hispanic Heritage Month began in 1968 as a week-long celebration under President Lyndon B. Johnson and was expanded to a month-long observance under President Ronald Reagan in 1988.
