Washington, DC – Today, Senator Michael Bennet issued the following statement regarding the Presidential Medal of Freedom award for Mr. Minoru Yasui:
“Our thoughts are with the proud family of Minoru Yasui today, as he posthumously received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The Japanese American lawyer fought for the civil and human rights of the marginalized and oppressed. He spent time in Japanese internment camps while he was a U.S. citizen. Today President Barack Obama awarded him the highest honor a civilian can receive, and one he surely deserves.”
In December 2014, Bennet sent a letter to the White House in support of Yasui’s nomination for the prestigious award.
