Washington, DC – The U.S. Senate unanimously passed a bipartisan resolution introduced by U.S. Senators Michael Bennet (D-CO) and John Cornyn (R-TX) to commemorate Cinco de Mayo. The resolution recognizes the historical significance of the 1862 Battle of Puebla and highlights the courage of Mexican forces against the invading French army, as part of their struggle for independence and freedom.

“The remarkable story of Cinco de Mayo is about resilient commitment in the face of incredible odds, and we continue to see that spirit in the many contributions Mexican-Americans have made to Colorado and the country. In Colorado, we enjoy a legacy of strong leaders, countless cultural influences, and a sense of vibrancy in our communities,” Bennet said. “It also serves a reminder to inspire us to remain focused on our fight to provide more opportunity for the next generation. The best legacy we could hope to leave behind is to ensure all of our kids and grandkids are prepared for success in the 21st century economy.”

“The desire for freedom is at the core of what it means to be a Texan, and is also what inspired the Mexican people to fight so bravely at the Battle of Puebla. Cinco de Mayo is a special day for Mexican-Americans, many of whom have had a tremendous impact on the culture, cuisine and social fabric of Texas,” Cornyn said.

The resolution is cosponsored by Senators Harry Reid (D-NV), Robert Menendez (D-NJ), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Tom Udall (D-NM), Charles E. Schumer (D-NY), Cory Gardner (R-CO), and Ted Cruz (R-TX).
