Washington, DC – In the Senate Finance Committee today, Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet introduced an amendment to make poverty a negotiating objective of future trade agreements.
“Trade and foreign investment can play an important role in global development. But we need to keep in mind that our trade policies should be crafted to reduce global poverty and eliminate hunger,” Bennet said. “This would be an important statement by this Congress that American trade policy is not just a way to open global commerce, but represents an opportunity to combat poverty.”
The amendment would ensure that trade negotiations prioritize policies that will contribute to the reduction of poverty and elimination of hunger.
