Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today saluted Interior Secretary Ken Salazar for his service to the state of Colorado and to the country. Salazar announced this morning that he will step down as the head of the Department of Interior in March after over four years of service.

“Secretary Salazar has been an exemplary leader for Colorado and the entire country,” Bennet said. “As a senator, Ken’s service to Coloradans was unrivaled in our state’s history. As Interior Secretary, his work now leaves a long legacy characterized by the thoughtful stewardship of our nation’s lands and waters and a long list of impressive accomplishments.

“Whether it was vastly expanding renewable energy opportunities on federal lands across the nation, pursuing a prudent and cautious approach on oil shale development in Colorado, or his deep commitment to conservation across the West; Ken Salazar did an outstanding job serving the President and our country.  I wish him the very best as he returns to our beautiful state to spend more time with his family.”

Salazar held the Senate seat currently occupied by Bennet before he was named Secretary of the Interior. Bennet supported Salazar’s efforts to protect Colorado’s lands, wildlife, and heritage.
