Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today joined a bipartisan coalition of 150 Senators and Members of Congress in urging the Joint Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, also known as the Supercommittee, to “go big” on a comprehensive plan for deficit reduction that includes discretionary spending cuts, and tax and entitlement reform.
“Congress’ gridlock has pushed its approval rating to single digits, below the likes of the IRS and BP at the height of the oil spill.
“It is time for Congress to do its work. Washington has to put ideology aside, rise above the senseless political debate, and have a serious conversation that produces a comprehensive solution that substantially reduces the deficit. We have seen a number of bipartisan, serious plans proposed. Now, 150 bipartisan Members of Congress are calling for a plan to ‘go big.’
“In town hall meetings across the state, Coloradans have told me they want a plan that will materially reduce the deficit, shows we’re all in it together and is bipartisan. I encourage the Joint Committee to reach consensus on a package like Bowles-Simpson so that Congress can have a chance to vote on it.”
