Washington, DC – Colorado U.S. Senator Michael Bennet today released the following statement on the cancelation of next week’s Senate in-state work period to remain in session and work to reduce the debt and the deficit.
“Coloradans sent us to Washington to do a job and solve the serious challenges and problems facing the country. After the 4th of July, we will return to Washington for what I hope will be serious, constructive and solutions-oriented work on our nation’s deficit and debt.
“A part of me would rather be back home spending time with my family and engaging in real, commonsense conversations with Coloradans than in Washington, a place that remains utterly detached from reality. I was looking forward to meeting with small business owners, farmers and ranchers on Colorado’s Eastern Plains following the 4th of July holiday.
“While we are stuck in Washington, I hope we move past the rhetoric of this debt discussion and actually engage in a conversation that will solve the fundamental problems and challenges facing our country. Because if we don’t, we’re not going to be able to support the aspirations that all of us have for this country, for our kids and for our grandkids.
“The American people sent us to Washington to come together, roll up our sleeves and solve the nation’s challenges. I am prepared to stay in Washington if Congress is ready to get the job done. We can’t afford to waste another week bickering and engaging in partisan politics. If we focus on finding commonsense solutions instead of screaming at one another, I’m confident we can find a way forward.”
