Washington, DC – Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator for Colorado, today released the following statement after the final U.S. combat brigade left Iraq:

“As the last U.S. combat brigade leaves Iraq, I am filled with immense gratitude to our men and women in uniform, some of whom served four tours of duty in Iraq,” said Bennet.  “Today is a day to honor our brave men and women for their dedication to service and our country.  They have served admirably and never abandoned their mission to protect our freedom.  Sadly, nearly 4,500 American service men and women—many of them Coloradans—have lost their lives during this conflict, and it is our duty to honor their service, sacrifice and commitment every day.

“We welcome home the service members who are returning from Iraq. We must also remember that we still have troops and civilians there and that America’s military continues to serve us all around the globe.  While the end to our combat role in Iraq is much reason to reflect on over seven years of service, let this also be an occasion to reaffirm our commitment to maintaining a strong, proud military.

“I remain committed to ensuring the safety of our troops overseas, so they return home to their families as soon as possible.”

Yesterday, Bennet announced the formation of the Senate Military Family Caucus, a bipartisan group of Senators that will focus on issues facing the families of active and veteran service men and women.
