Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator for Colorado-joined by Senators Kay Hagan, Evan Bayh, Claire McCaskill and Mark Warner-is leading an effort to urge Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid to include a failsafe mechanism in the final version of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The measure would ensure that Congress keeps to the aggressive cost savings schedule set out in the act.
In a letter, the senators stress the need to deliver on the promised savings and deficit reduction of health care reform, and adhere to the failsafe mechanism as a tool for Congress to ensure the bill does just that.
The letter states, “By incorporating a failsafe mechanism into the Act, we can strengthen our commitment to the American people that health care reform will reduce our debt and place our country on a sounder financial footing.”
