Michael Bennet, U.S. Senator for Colorado, made the following statement today offering his support for a resolution recognizing the country’s 268 Hispanic Serving Institutions (HSIs), including Colorado’s Adams State College, Colorado State University-Pueblo, Community College of Denver, Otero Junior College, Pueblo Community College, and Trinidad State Junior College.

HSIs are colleges and universities at which at least a quarter of the enrolled students are Hispanic and no less than 50 percent of Hispanic students are low-income.

Bennet is a co-sponsor of the resolution, which designates the week of Sept. 20 as “National Hispanic Serving Institutions Week.” It calls on Americans to celebrate the many contributions that Hispanic Serving Institutions have made to improving access to higher education and to their local communities.

“Colorado’s Hispanic Serving Institutions help make the dream of a college education a reality for students across the state and prepare them to join the workforce that keeps Colorado’s economy moving.

“These institutions support their communities as employers and as a gathering place for cultural opportunities and community conversations. Last month, I had the opportunity to hold a meaningful conversation on health care with about 300 Coloradans at CSU-Pueblo. I’m proud to support these schools and their great work now and in the future.”
