Washington, D.C. – United States Senator Michael Bennet issued the following statement regarding his vote in favor of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 (S.181). The measure, which passed the full Senate by a bipartisan vote of 61 to 36, seeks to restore equal pay for equal work by reversing a U.S. Supreme Court decision that placed limits on an individual’s ability seek redress for wage discrimination in the workplace:
“I voted in favor of this bill because it provides a realistic timeframe for individuals who believe they’ve suffered from wage-related discrimination to seek fair recourse for their grievances,” said Senator Bennet. “All Americans, regardless of race, age or gender, deserve a level of pay that fully reflects the scale of their effort. As our nation faces one of the most serious economic crises in a generation, hardworking Americans and their families can’t afford anything less.”
S.181 will now go to the President’s desk for signature into law.
